50% Voice Concerned About Serious Trash Problem at Baseball Stadium
83% of baseball fans responded that the 'trash problem at baseball stadiums is serious.'
The environmental organization Green Korea United revealed the results of a survey conducted from June 20 to July 27 at nine professional baseball stadiums nationwide, targeting 2,020 baseball fans, on the 5th.
33% of respondents said the trash problem at baseball stadiums is 'very serious.' 50% answered 'serious,' and 15% said it was 'average.' Only 1.5% and 0.5% of respondents said it was 'not serious' or 'not serious at all,' respectively.
In particular, 56% of respondents said it is difficult to separate and dispose of trash at baseball stadiums. Green Korea United explained that some stadiums do not have designated disposal bins sorted by material type. The structure makes it difficult to separate trash because spectators leave all at once after the game ends.
There was also criticism that it is difficult to properly return reusable containers due to lack of information. Only 46% of respondents knew that when ordering food at stadium stores, they could receive it in reusable containers. Even fewer, 36%, said they had actually used the reusable container service. They pointed out that there are insufficient return bins for reusable containers and a lack of information about where to return them and which stores provide reusable containers.
Regarding measures to solve the trash problem at baseball stadiums, respondents mentioned 'active use of reusable containers and efforts to separate trash by spectators (39%)' and 'introduction and expansion of reusable container services by baseball teams (29%).'
Meanwhile, as of 2021, waste generated at baseball stadiums amounted to 3,444 tons, accounting for 35% of waste from sports facilities.
