YouTube Stops Recommending Videos That Promote Specific Body Idealization to Adolescents

YouTube has decided to stop recommending videos that idealize physical features to teenagers through its algorithm, the UK Guardian reported on the 5th (local time).

According to the report, YouTube stated that although content related to body weight and physical features did not violate its guidelines, repeatedly watching such content could affect the well-being of some users.

The new guidelines apply to videos that idealize certain physical features or emphasize desirable body types or weights. These guidelines will be applied when the logged-in YouTube account belongs to a teenager.

Experts have long warned that repeatedly watching content related to weight or physical features can be harmful to mental health.

Dr. Gus Graham, YouTube’s Healthcare Director, explained, "Teenagers are in the process of developing their sense of identity," adding, "Repeated consumption of content showing idealized standards leads to the formation of unrealistic internal standards."

Allison Briscoe-Smith, a clinician and YouTube advisor, emphasized, "Frequently encountering content that idealizes unhealthy standards or behaviors can highlight potentially problematic messages and affect how some teenagers view themselves."
