Concerns have been raised about the discontinuity and lack of professionalism within the organizing committee of the Jeonnam International Sumukh Biennale, which will mark its fourth edition next year.

On the 5th, Yoon Myung-hee, Chairperson of the Economic, Tourism and Culture Committee (Democratic Party of Korea, Jangheung 2), pointed out during a Jeollanam-do Provincial Assembly administrative inquiry, “All staff members of the International Sumukh Biennale are dispatched employees. Therefore, once the biennale ends, the organization is disbanded, and there is not a single employee working long-term.”

Chairperson Yoon emphasized, “Because the organization changes every time, the new team essentially has to prepare the event from scratch. Passing on remaining white papers or documents is like giving someone a manual and telling them to learn swimming.”

She also stated, “Above all, the core of the International Sumukh Biennale is the ‘exhibition,’ but since there are no staff members with such expertise, the exhibition part is entirely entrusted to the general contractor through a contract.”

She added, “To gain domestic recognition and build an art network, the first step for the Sumukh Biennale is to hire exhibition planning personnel. A systematic infrastructure must be established, including data management of artists and exhibited works, to envision the biennale’s sustainable development.”

Furthermore, she said, “To become a truly international exhibition worthy of the name Jeonnam International Sumukh Biennale, it is necessary to form an international network through the recruitment of professionals. In this regard, the nearby Gwangju Biennale should be emulated, as it started by hiring professionals, laid the foundation for exhibition planning personnel, and formed an art ecosystem in the region.”
