Pohang City Achieves Both Disaster and Safety Management... Selected as an Excellent Institution for Disaster and Safety Mayor Kangdeok Lee is taking a commemorative photo with the staff of the relevant departments after being selected as an outstanding institution in the '2024 Disaster Management Evaluation' and the 'Korea Safety Great Transition Intensive Safety Inspection' hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

The city has achieved this remarkable feat by establishing a proactive evacuation system for disaster preparedness, implementing regular drills to achieve zero casualties, and taking advanced measures for citizen safety, leading to consecutive recognitions as an excellent institution in the field of disaster safety.

In particular, being selected as an excellent institution in the ‘2024 Disaster Management Evaluation’ has allowed the city to receive a special grant of 88 million KRW and a reward.

Since Typhoon Hinnamnor, Pohang City has established a proactive and organic disaster response system, conducted urban safety diagnostics, formulated comprehensive disaster prevention plans, and built an integrated disaster management system, AI-based CCTV, and smart village safety communities.

Furthermore, by expanding urban flood prevention projects, the city is enhancing its capabilities as a leading disaster safety city and making various efforts to thoroughly prepare for unpredictable disasters.

The disaster management evaluation is conducted annually for 332 disaster management agencies nationwide, including central government agencies and local governments, through on-site and written assessments on 44 indicators across six categories: common, prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, and additional/deduction points.

This year, Pohang City, selected as an excellent institution, received high marks not only for disaster preparedness but also for its disaster response capabilities.

The city demonstrated outstanding safety capabilities by earning high scores in various indicators such as: ▲operation of disaster management organizations and personnel ▲expansion of financial investment plans in disaster safety ▲management of manuals by disaster type ▲establishment of cooperation systems ▲crisis management ▲formation and operation of disaster response task forces ▲rapid initial response capabilities during disasters ▲actual disaster response, among others.

The ‘Korea Safety Transformation Intensive Safety Inspection’ is an annual government initiative that sets a period to intensively inspect facilities at risk of disasters or various other accidents.

During the intensive safety inspection, Pohang City conducted effective inspections on a total of 94 facilities, including those requested by residents, utilizing inspection teams composed of private sector experts in each field and advanced equipment such as thermal imaging cameras.

In this inspection, the city was selected as an excellent institution by receiving high scores in five evaluation indicators: ▲effectiveness of safety inspections ▲performance in expanding safety inspections ▲appropriateness of safety inspection feedback ▲efforts in disclosing and managing inspection results ▲contribution to policy, among others.

Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, “Being consecutively selected as an excellent institution in disaster safety evaluations has become an opportunity for Pohang City’s disaster safety management capabilities to be recognized externally,” and added, “We will not be complacent with these results and will do our utmost to make Pohang a strong and safe city even against unpredictable disasters.”
