Dexter Studio continues its comprehensive activities on the global stage with its unparalleled virtual production technology.
The content-specialized company Dexter Studio announced on the 5th that it has completed the establishment of a virtual production studio for Thailand's comprehensive media group Kantana, which it provided technical consulting for. Successfully completing the establishment and consulting of the overseas virtual production studio on the largest scale in Thailand, it also wrapped up an Amazon Prime OTT project, marking the first time a Korean company has undertaken such a project abroad.
Since early last year, the two companies have maintained a friendly relationship and continued cooperation. In March last year, Kantana Chairman Kaljaruk and key executives from its affiliates visited Dexter Studio’s headquarters and its own virtual production studio D1 to directly inspect the infrastructure. They signed an MOU for studio construction, and in September, a formal business contract was finalized, leading to the actual establishment.
It took about eight months from the studio planning stage to final completion, with Dexter Studio’s VP headquarters core members staying in Thailand for three months to enhance the quality. For local system optimization, they directly handled ▲space and LED wall design and on-site inspection ▲system stabilization, and provided consulting across all areas including ▲equipment installation and operation methods ▲2D and 3D workflow pipelines ▲VP shooting workflows ▲production and filming supervision.
Collaboration with major vendors such as Unreal Engine developer Epic Games, virtual production hardware and software company Disguise, as well as Pixreal, Brompton, and Stype strengthened competitiveness.
Content featuring the company’s technology will also be released on global OTT platforms. The Amazon Prime Video original series "Butterfly" recently completed filming at D1. It attracted attention with Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim’s appearance and a long-term location shoot in Seoul lasting about four months.
A company representative emphasized, "Dexter became the first domestic studio to carry out an Amazon Prime Video original project using virtual production technology."
According to the company, they participated from the project planning stage, designing shooting solutions and conducting pre-visualization work using Unreal Engine. During production, they developed their own driving plates for driving scenes, and utilized ICVFX (in-camera visual effects) that simultaneously capture virtual backgrounds implemented with LED displays and actual actor performances.
Lee Dong-jun, head of Dexter Studio’s VP headquarters, explained, “We successfully completed the task based on our 2021 studio preparation experience and operational capabilities accumulated through an active portfolio in films, OTT, and advertising since the studio’s opening.” He added, “At the recent Golden Horse Film Festival workshop, Taiwanese film and video production officials visited and expressed amazement at our demonstrations and operational capabilities.”
