One recipient each for Grand Prize, Excellence Award, and Encouragement Award
Geochang County, Gyeongnam announced on the 5th that it achieved remarkable results by winning awards in 3 out of 6 categories at the 2024 Gyeongnam Hanwoo Contest. The county participated in all six categories, starting with the 19th Gyeongnam Hanwoo Premium Beef Contest and culminating in the 9th Gyeongnam Hanwoo Evaluation held at the Hapcheon Livestock Cooperative Smart Hanwoo Auction Market on the 3rd.
The Gyeongnam Hanwoo Contest consists of the Premium Beef Contest and the Hanwoo Evaluation. It is a festival and a gathering for Hanwoo farmers in Gyeongnam, hosted by the Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters of Nonghyup Economic Holdings and sponsored by the Gyeongsangnam-do Hanwoo Self-help Fund Management Committee. Last year, the event was held in Haman County, and this year it took place in Hapcheon County.
At this year’s contest, Geochang County’s Son Hyesun from Buksang-myeon won the Excellence Award (prize of 1 million KRW) in the preliminary Premium Beef Contest. In the main Hanwoo Evaluation, Son Insun from Namsang-myeon received the Grand Prize (prize of 1.5 million KRW) in the Gyeongsanwoo (Cow Division 1) category, and Jang Byeongseong from Goje-myeon earned the Encouragement Award (prize of 500,000 KRW) in the Genomic Genetic Ability category.
The cow that won the Grand Prize in the Gyeongsanwoo (Cow Division 1) category at this contest is scheduled to participate in the National Hanwoo Contest to be held in October.
County Governor Koo Inmo said, “Even in these challenging times with rising management costs for Hanwoo farmers, I applaud the participating farmers and contest officials who have proven the excellence of Geochang Hanwoo at this event. We will do our best to overcome the crisis in the Hanwoo industry and to build a prosperous rural community.”
