The prosecution appealed the first trial verdict that sentenced actor Yoo Ah-in (37), who was indicted on charges including habitual drug use, to one year in prison, arguing that the sentence was too light.
According to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the 4th, the prosecution filed the appeal requesting a heavier sentence for Yoo. Yoo was sentenced in the first trial to one year in prison and a fine of 2 million won for habitual use of propofol and other drugs 181 times, illegal prescription and purchase of sleeping pills under another person's name 44 times, marijuana smoking, and instructing evidence destruction.
The prosecution explained the reason for the appeal, stating, "Despite the seriousness of the crimes, including habitual trading and use of various types of drugs such as marijuana, propofol, and zolpidem over a long period, and instructing evidence destruction to obstruct judicial procedures, the sentence was significantly lighter than the prosecution's demand of four years in prison."
Yoo was taken into custody in court following the first trial verdict the previous day.
The court stated, "Considering the duration, frequency, method, and quantity of the crimes, there is considerable blame," and added, "The crime was committed by exploiting loopholes in the management methods stipulated by related laws, so the nature of the crime is also unfavorable."
However, the court cited the sentencing reasons, saying, "Yoo has suffered from sleep disorders and depression for a long time, and the motive for habitual use and purchase of medical narcotics was mainly due to the pain of being unable to sleep, which is a factor to be taken into consideration."
