Close Cooperation on North Korea Provocations... Support for the 'Unification Doctrine'

The South Korea-U.S. deputy foreign ministers shared the view to ensure that the close cooperation between the two countries continues by strengthening high-level communication.


According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 4th, Kim Hong-kyun, First Vice Foreign Minister of South Korea, held a South Korea-U.S. deputy foreign ministers' meeting with Kurt Campbell, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, on the 3rd (local time) in Washington D.C. Both sides exchanged opinions on major bilateral issues, including the South Korea-U.S. alliance, trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, and coordination on North Korea-related matters.

Both sides assessed that bipartisan support for the South Korea-U.S. alliance remains unwavering and strong. They also agreed to strengthen high-level communication to successfully manage the achievements derived so far as a global comprehensive strategic alliance and to maintain optimal policy coordination.


They agreed to closely cooperate on North Korea’s provocations and Russia-North Korea military cooperation as well.


Vice Foreign Minister Kim explained the "8.15 Unification Doctrine," which embodies the goal of a "free and peaceful Korean Peninsula," and Deputy Secretary Campbell reaffirmed the U.S. side’s support for President Yoon Suk-yeol’s objective to open a path for serious and sustained diplomacy with North Korea, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained.


Furthermore, both sides expressed satisfaction with the achievements of South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Camp David summit and agreed to continue strengthening cooperation going forward. They plan to meet again as soon as possible to continue consultations.
