Geumcheon-gu Office Area Transformed into Science Theme Park... Geumcheon-gu Hosts 6th Science Festival

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that the 6th ‘Geumcheon Science Festival’ will be held for two days from September 6 to 7 around the Geumcheon-gu Office area.

The ‘Geumcheon Science Festival’ was planned under the theme ‘Geumcheon empathizing with AI, communicating the future through science’ to raise residents’ interest in the district’s artificial intelligence projects and to spread the awareness of ‘everyday life with science.’

At the science festival, more than 50 diverse performances, lectures, hands-on experiences, and exhibition programs related to science, including artificial intelligence (AI), space, and the environment, will be held.

The festival’s commemorative ceremony will be held at noon on the 7th, where the humanoid robot ‘Amy’ will co-host the event with a professional MC. Joint performances featuring the large robot ‘Titan’ and a quadruped robot will be held twice a day, four times in total, including during the ceremony.

To aid understanding and increase interest in science, special lectures on space exploration and forensic science will be conducted. At 1:30 PM on the 6th, on the main stage, Captain Moon Kyung-soo, Korea’s first scientific explorer and the first Asian to participate in NASA’s astrobiology exploration project, will give a lecture titled ‘Space Exploration with AI and Robots.’

At 1:30 PM on the 7th, at Geumnarae Art Hall, Director Pyo Chang-won of the Crime Science Research Institute will deliver a special lecture on ‘Scientific Investigation and Profiling Careers in the AI Era.’

Nine science club teams will propose their ideas by team at the ‘G-Hackathon Presentation’ under the theme ‘Happy Earth, Good Technology’ on the 6th at Geumnarae Art Hall.

On the 7th, family-oriented events such as the ‘Autonomous Driving Driver’ event and the ‘Spiro Challenge’ will take place, and participants can experience about ten basic science experiments through the ‘Surprise Science Grand Exploration’ program.

During the festival, the main gate plaza will feature the ‘AI Ground,’ a representation of the future city of Geumcheon made with LEGO blocks, and experience centers for autonomous vehicle coding using AI, comic (webtoon) creation, and writing will be operated.

The AI Promotion Center will introduce 19 new projects and 17 ongoing projects related to artificial intelligence launched by the district. In collaboration with the SK Social Welfare Foundation (Happy Connect), three AI care services will be demonstrated, and a voice recognition AI chatbot developed with ESTsoft will also be operated.

At the Mulcheombeong Plaza, visitors can enjoy a bingo game using drones (‘Pop Drone Challenge’) and robot riding experiences, while at the Sunken Plaza, activities such as making a balanced dragonfly and an adjustable desk fan using 3D printers, Geumcheon Green Mileage, magnetic levitation trains, and creating personal safes will be available.

The ‘Forensic CSI Camp’ in cooperation with the Pyo Chang-won Crime Science Research Institute will be held five times on the 7th at the Lifelong Learning Center, and AI archery and shooting experiences as well as virtual reality (VR) sports programs will be conducted at the 12th-floor auditorium of Geumcheon-gu Office.

Additionally, programs linked with related institutions include the ‘Sci-PoP’ exhibition featuring scientific principle experience content from the National Gwacheon Science Museum, an escape bus experience supported by the Seoul Science Museum, and an exhibition of winning entries from the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute’s astrophotography contest.

Visitors who collect stamps after experiencing programs throughout the venue can receive ice cream made by a robot, and there will also be cheering message participation events and visit certification events.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “This year’s Geumcheon Science Festival will showcase various technologies, education, and experiences based on artificial intelligence, which is currently the biggest issue in the scientific community,” adding, “I hope residents enjoy and learn science and that this becomes an opportunity to recognize the development and great power of our science.”
