Samsung Life Insurance "Top Concerns of The Health Users: Diet and Muscle Strengthening"

Samsung Life Insurance's health management application, 'THE Health,' revealed that users' primary interests are 'dieting' and 'muscle strengthening.' It was analyzed that teenagers and people in their 20s show a higher interest in dieting, while older age groups prefer muscle strengthening.

Samsung Life Insurance announced on the 3rd that this result was obtained by analyzing the health management goals of 24,000 THE Health users. This data analysis was derived from survey responses of participants in a health management event conducted from April to July this year.

According to the analysis, more than half (52.3%) of users aged 20 and under chose dieting as their health management goal. Users aged 60 and above ranked muscle strengthening as their top priority. As the users' age increased, there was a tendency to focus more on muscle strengthening rather than dieting.

The proportion of users who performed daily muscle strengthening exercises during the event period was also recorded at 40% among those aged 60 and above, more than twice as high as the 18% among users aged 20 and under. This is interpreted as older adults paying more attention and effort to increasing and maintaining muscle mass to prevent 'sarcopenia,' which is directly related to health.

They are engaging in so-called 'Geuntech (muscle asset management)' by managing muscle mass to save on medical expenses in old age. According to domestic research, the economic loss caused by medical and nursing care costs due to sarcopenia in old age is estimated to be worth approximately 14 million KRW per kilogram of muscle.

Meanwhile, the newly introduced 'Sleep Analysis Service' in THE Health this year is gaining popularity by helping users achieve restful sleep. Since various studies have shown that lack of sleep nearly doubles the risk of metabolic syndrome and other conditions, sleep is considered an important factor in health management. THE Health analyzes breathing sounds during sleep and provides customized solutions such as stretching and meditation based on sleep scores to help users achieve healthy sleep.

According to the sleep analysis results of 1,000 participants in the 'Sleep Jinshim Event' held for three weeks starting May 20, 43.7% of participants scored below 70 on average in the first week, indicating insufficient restful sleep. The average sleep duration was 5 hours and 42 minutes, significantly lower than the OECD average of 8 hours and 27 minutes and the Korean average daily sleep time of 7 hours and 51 minutes.

Among participants with an average sleep score below 70 in the first week, 76% improved their sleep quality through three weeks of sleep analysis. Four out of ten participants improved their sleep score by 5 points or more by the third week. The overall proportion of participants scoring below 70 decreased by about 10% compared to the first week, reaching 34.8%.

In celebration of its 2nd anniversary last April, THE Health introduced new services such as the sleep analysis service and comprehensively upgraded existing services including exercise programs, meal and nutrition management, and meditation content. It also operates challenge events like the '7-Day Healthy Habit Mission' to make daily health management from waking up to going to bed easy and enjoyable.

A Samsung Life Insurance official stated, “We hope that the entire nation can effectively manage their health with the newly revamped THE Health,” and added, “We will continue to provide differentiated services and benefits to establish ourselves as a national health management platform.”
