Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the 'Seokgye Station Moonlight Night Walk (夜行)' event to revitalize the Wolgye-dong local commercial district.
Selected as part of Seoul City's '2024 Nighttime and Food Culture Revitalization Support Project,' this event will take place on the 20th from 4 PM to 10 PM around Seokgye Station Cultural Park. It was planned to strengthen the self-sustainability of the stagnant Wolgye-dong alley commercial district and to attract foot traffic by providing an event that widely promotes the charm of the commercial area.
The main features of the event include ▲ 27 types of food booths and 3 types of craft beer and Makgeolli ▲ performances and events using two stages ▲ nostalgic entertainment and experiential programs.
First, as a food culture event, high-quality food offerings are prepared. Since participating vendors were selected through screening, the quality and prices are excellent, and local merchants based in Wolgye-dong and Gongneung-dong have gathered. Drinks to enhance the flavor of late-night snacks are prepared by two craft beer breweries in Nowon and the Gongneung-dong Dokkaebi Market Merchants Association nearby. There will be 22 booths selling food, 5 booths selling coffee and desserts, and 3 booths selling craft beer and handcrafted Makgeolli.
At the main stage of Seokgye Station Cultural Park, singer Hyun Jin-young's performance will be the main event, along with exciting performances such as DJing and retro dance. A children's playground is also set up on one side. For this event, the Seokgye Station public parking lot will be transformed into a resting area for visitors. Busking performances with acoustic guitars and various experiential programs that evoke nostalgia for the 70s and 80s will be held here.
The district has continuously communicated to ensure that the inaugural Seokgye Station Moonlight Night Walk festival is a collaborative event with nearby merchants rather than being government-led. The expectations of Wolgye-dong residents awaiting the event are high. This is because they confirmed that the Gongneung-dong 'Coffee Festival,' located across the Jungnangcheon Stream, quickly grew into a representative local festival and served as an opportunity to revive the identity of the commercial district after its first event last year.
A district official explained the background for selecting the Seokgye Station alley commercial district as the stage for the 'Nighttime and Food Culture Revitalization Support Project,' saying, “The Seokgye Station area is a commercial district where subway lines 1 and 6 intersect, and nearby universities such as Induk University and Kwangwoon University provide potential to revitalize the area centered around them.”
Meanwhile, from 1 AM on the event day until 3 AM the next day, the road from in front of Seokgye Station Cultural Park to the Dongshin Apartment entrance intersection will be operated as a car-free road, and the village bus route Nowon 09 passing through this section will be temporarily rerouted. The district plans to minimize residents' inconvenience through prior notice to nearby residents and traffic control on the day.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “This event is carefully designed to combine commercial district revitalization with cultural events to provide a unique experience, befitting the reputation of Nowon as a cultural city,” and added, “We will support the Seokgye Station area, a representative local commercial district of Wolgye-dong, to regain vitality and become a driving force for regional development along with the Kwangwoon University Station area.”
