On September 2, they paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Jeong In-hwa, exchanging congratulatory letters signed by the mayors of both cities to commemorate their friendship. They also toured the “20th Anniversary Photo Exhibition of the Sister City Relationship between Gwangyang City, Korea and Shenzhen City, China,” which showcased the appearance of Shenzhen and the precious history of their exchanges.
Mayor Jeong In-hwa of Gwangyang said to the delegation, “Since the sister city relationship was established, Gwangyang and Shenzhen have actively exchanged in various fields, maintaining a close relationship with over 100 mutual visits in 20 years. I hope we can utilize the common grounds for intercity exchange and cooperation to collaborate even more closely.” He expressed his welcome and expectations.
Director Feng Xiukun responded, “We are grateful to Gwangyang for always valuing and protecting our friendly relationship. We hope that through practical exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as economy, culture and arts, education, and new industries, the partnership between our two global innovative cities will be firmly established.”
Despite the short schedule, the delegation visited major local facilities such as POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks and the Provincial Art Museum, exploring Gwangyang’s industrial and cultural infrastructure.
A Gwangyang city official stated, “The visit of the Shenzhen delegation to Gwangyang is significant as it is a step to further strengthen the friendly relations and expand exchange cooperation between the two cities. We hope many citizens will visit the ‘20th Anniversary Photo Exhibition of the Sister City Relationship between Gwangyang City, Korea and Shenzhen City, China,’ held in the lobby on the first floor of Gwangyang City Hall from September 2 to October 31, and feel the friendship between the two cities through the exhibition.”
Meanwhile, Shenzhen is China’s first Special Economic Zone city and is home to global technology companies such as Tencent, Huawei, DJI (drone manufacturer), and BYD (electric vehicle manufacturer), earning it the nickname “China’s Silicon Valley.” As a financial and global trade hub and a center for startups and entrepreneurship, Shenzhen has been growing remarkably. Since signing the international sister city agreement in October 2004, Shenzhen and Gwangyang have maintained active exchanges.
