Pohang City Launches Policy Initiatives to Boost Job Opportunities for Young Women

First Among Local Governments, Study on Employment Status and Promotion Strategies for 'Young Women'

On the 2nd, Pohang City held the final report presentation for the 'Research Service for Revitalizing Jobs for Young Women in Pohang' at the City Hall's main conference room.

Pohang City Launches Policy Initiatives to Boost Job Opportunities for Young Women On the 2nd, Pohang City held the final presentation of the "Research Project for the Activation of Women's Youth Employment" at City Hall.

This research project was prepared to respond to the 'regional extinction' crisis faced by local cities by identifying the current status of economic activities among young women in Pohang, analyzing the causes of their net outflow, and establishing strategies to revitalize jobs for young women in line with changes in the local industrial structure.

In particular, this project is significant in that, for the first time among basic local governments, it focused on the specific group of 'young women'?rather than the general 'youth' category?to study the current job situation and measures for revitalization.

This research drew attention to the role of young women as a key factor in responding to low birth rates and regional extinction, inspired by the so-called 'extinction risk index'?the ratio of women aged 20 to 39 to the population aged 65 and older.

Accordingly, a database was established for future policy development through statistical surveys related to population and employment in Pohang and a survey on the current status of young women in the city.

Specifically, the research examined the population status and trends of Pohang by analyzing the extinction risk index, marriage and childbirth status, and population movement. It also compared and analyzed the employment rate, job environment, and residential conditions of young women in Pohang with those of nearby local cities with similar backgrounds, in order to explore policy directions for jobs for young women in Pohang.

The study highlighted the need to create favorable residential conditions and new cultural spaces to attract women in their 20s and 30s, to discover high-quality jobs preferred by women, and to establish a family-friendly corporate culture that enables a work-life balance.

Vice Mayor Jang Sangkil stated, "We are focusing on diversifying industries, from traditional manufacturing-based jobs to digital, IT, bio, and MICE sectors, to create quality jobs for young women in the region. We hope this research will help revitalize jobs for young women, and we will continue our efforts to develop and support policies for job creation for young women."

Pohang City plans to post the results of this research on its internal system so that all employees can refer to it in their work.
