Property Damage: 70s Fined 500,000 KRW and Sentenced to 1 Year Probation

A man in his 70s who scribbled on a car's windows because it was parked without permission in front of his office received a suspended sentence with a fine.

On the 1st, the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 1 (Judge Shin Dong-il) announced that it sentenced Mr. A (71), who was charged with property damage, to a fine of 500,000 won and a one-year suspended sentence. Mr. A is accused of damaging the victim Mr. B's Genesis car by writing "Move parking phone" with a marker on the front windshield of the vehicle in a parking lot in Gangwon Province last November, because the car was parked without permission in front of his office.

In addition to the front windshield, Mr. A wrote the same phrase evenly on the driver's door window and the rear driver's door window. Due to this incident, the victim Mr. B suffered damages including unknown repair costs for the vehicle.

The court explained the sentencing by stating, "The defendant admitted his wrongdoing, and considering that the victim's unauthorized parking partially provoked the crime, and the degree of reduction in the utility of the passenger car was not significant."

In 2018, a man in his 70s who scribbled on a neighbor's car also received a fine. In June of the same year, Judge No Mi-jung of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 11 sentenced Mr. A (70), who was tried for property damage, to a fine of 500,000 won. In May 2017, Mr. A found a passenger car blocking the sloped driveway on the first floor of an apartment in Seoul where he lived. Mr. A, saying "I am angry because passage has become inconvenient," drew X marks with a permanent marker on the front, left and right rear sides, and license plate of the vehicle. For this, he was fined 500,000 won.
