Statistics Korea, July Online Shopping Trends
The online food service (delivery) transaction amount in July, when the Paris Olympics opening ceremony took place, recorded an all-time high.
According to the 'July 2024 Online Shopping Trends' announced by Statistics Korea on the 2nd, the total transaction amount of online shopping malls in July was 19.9626 trillion won, an increase of 5.4% compared to the same month last year.
Despite consumption contraction due to economic sluggishness, the online shopping transaction amount in July continued its upward trend, but the growth rate was smaller than usual due to the impact of incidents such as the Timf case.
By product category, the transaction amount for food services reached 2.5526 trillion won, marking an all-time high. This is an 8.9% increase compared to the same month last year. It is analyzed that the increase in frozen food and delivery food transactions was influenced by the Paris Olympics. Sales events for agricultural and marine products centered around local governments before Chuseok also likely contributed to the increase in transaction amounts.
Besides food services, food and beverages (14.6%) and daily necessities (11.1%) also increased compared to a year ago.
The mobile transaction amount in online shopping was 15.1173 trillion won, up 6.9% from a year earlier. The share of mobile transactions increased by 1.0 percentage point to 75.7%.
The transaction amount of general malls handling various types of products was 11.8264 trillion won, and that of specialized malls was 8.1361 trillion won, increasing by 3.0% and 9.1% respectively compared to the same month last year.
