Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to Reapply for Ministry of Education Central Investment Review in April Next Year
Targeting School Opening in 2029 with 18 Classes and 504 Students
Seoul City: "Educational Environment Must Be Established According to the Same Standards as the Main School"
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has expressed its support for the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education's announcement to establish a middle school branch within the Olympic Park Foreon (Dunchon Jugong Reconstruction) complex.
On the 2nd, Seoul City stated, "If the central investment review by the Ministry of Education is approved, we plan to actively work to create an excellent educational environment, including a safe commuting environment and improvement of the surrounding area."
The site for the middle school was designated as part of the redevelopment plan in November 2006 at the request of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and the Gangdong-Songpa Education Support Office. The Office of Education signed an agreement with the association and received the school site as a donation, securing 16,124.9㎡ of land for the school site to promote the establishment of a new middle school.
The establishment of the middle school faced difficulties as it failed to pass the Ministry of Education's review. In April 2020, the Ministry of Education's central investment review deemed the school establishment inappropriate due to a lack of demand. Based on this review, Seoul City attempted to convert the school site into a public open space but decided to maintain the school site considering opposition from the Office of Education and Gangdong District. The Office of Education is now aiming to pass the central investment review by April next year to establish a middle school branch.
Although the school will be established as a branch within the complex, the city requested the Office of Education to closely monitor changes in student numbers and gather opinions from various stakeholders regarding the establishment plan to ensure it is established according to the same standards as the main school.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 28th of last month that it plans to open the 'Dunchon-dong Middle School Urban Campus' in March 2029. The scale will be 18 classes with 504 students, located on 12,605.66㎡ (3,813 pyeong) of the school site secured through donation within the complex, excluding the kindergarten site.
