The “Are You Well, 1,000 Won Meal” program, which provides a hearty meal to neighbors in need of care, has taken its first step.

On the 30th of last month, Singa-dong in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju (District Mayor Park Byung-gyu) served meat and easily digestible vegetable side dishes to over 30 elderly people in care who are in welfare blind spots at the local alley restaurant “Cheonghaejin’s Dream.”

The “Are You Well, 1,000 Won Meal” is a meal-sharing initiative that offers a generous meal to neighbors in need of care once a month for 1,000 won, made possible through relay participation by local community organizations and alley businesses.

This time, the 1,000 Won Meal was supported by “Shinpung Sagong (Community Loving Singa-dong Pungyeongjeong),” which provided budget support and volunteer work, and also delivered songpyeon (rice cakes) made by hand in celebration of Chuseok.

The meal fees collected from the 1,000 Won Meal will be donated to neighbors in need at the end of the year to realize the value of sharing and spread hope.

Singa-dong plans to support preferred restaurant types and menus tailored to target groups such as youth, elderly living alone, and people with disabilities.

Additionally, by having local community organizations participate in rotation, the project aims to secure sustainability.

Park Se-gyeong, head of Singa-dong, said, “We plan to promote the alley restaurants participating in sharing so that local residents can take an interest and actively use them,” adding, “We will support Singa-dong to become a warm community where neighbors care for neighbors through this warm meal-sharing prepared for neighbors in need of care.”
