The 3-year-old girl was unable to breathe after candy got stuck in her throat. The older sister, who was sitting on the sofa, stood up and removed the candy by pressing on her sibling’s chest. It is reported that the 6-year-old girl recalled the emergency procedure her parents had taught her and performed the rescue.
The Heimlich Maneuver is an emergency procedure used when the airway is blocked by a foreign object. The rescuer stands behind the patient, wraps their arms around them, and pushes the abdomen upward to increase pressure in the airway. If oxygen is cut off, consciousness can be lost within 3 minutes, and brain damage begins after 5 minutes, so the Heimlich Maneuver must be performed as quickly as possible.
