Memorial Park Construction Support Team Visits Museum SAN to Discuss Integration Plans for Pohang Memorial Park
Gathering Diverse Opinions to Develop Burial Facilities as Spaces for Culture, Art, and Healing
Pohang City conducted a field trip to Museum SAN in Wonju, Gangwon Province, which was selected as one of the 100 Outstanding Architectural Works, on the 30th of last month. The visit included Deputy Mayor Jang Sanggil and more than 20 directors and managers from the Memorial Park Construction Support Team.
On August 30, Pohang City conducted a field trip to Museum SAN located in Wonju, Gangwon Province, in relation to the construction of a memorial park.
Since confirming the site for the memorial park in June, the city has been striving to create a healing space that goes beyond a simple burial facility, aiming for completion in 2028. The park will be a place where culture, art, history, and the spirit of filial piety coexist.
To strengthen communication with residents, the city has formed a residents’ consultative body composed of representatives from Guryongpo. In addition, the Memorial Park Construction Support Team has been launched, consisting of working groups for administrative support in areas such as economic industry, urban development, culture and tourism, community welfare, and marine environment.
During the benchmarking visit, the Memorial Park Construction Support Team examined the case of Museum SAN, which features unique design and harmonious use of space within nature. The team developed a consensus on how burial facilities can be transformed into spaces for culture, art, and healing.
Opened in 2013, Museum SAN was designed by renowned architect Ando Tadao. It is a complex art space with various cultural and artistic themed areas, including a welcome center, flower garden, water garden, and museum, where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature along with diverse works of art.
Based on the results of this field trip, Pohang City plans to strengthen collaboration among the support team and actively incorporate diverse opinions to create a premium memorial park that will satisfy all citizens.
Deputy Mayor Jang Sanggil stated, "By reviewing various cases and gathering opinions, we will do our best to ensure that the Pohang Memorial Park is built as an eco-friendly and culturally rich tourist attraction."
