Gangnam-gu Conducts Detailed Electrical Facility Inspections at Public Use Facilities

Special Response to Electrical Disasters... Strengthening Management System in Collaboration with External Expert Organizations

Gangnam-gu Conducts Detailed Electrical Facility Inspections at Public Use Facilities Gangnam-gu will conduct a thorough inspection of public facilities within its jurisdiction. Provided by Gangnam-gu.

Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will conduct a thorough inspection to prevent electrical disasters at all 92 public facilities within the district from the 2nd to October 31st, becoming the first local government nationwide to do so.

Due to the recent prolonged heatwave, the use of electrical appliances such as air conditioners has sharply increased, leading to many fire incidents caused by overloads and electrical leakage. According to the Fire Agency, out of approximately 38,000 fire incidents last year, about 10,000 cases (27%) were caused by electrical fires.

The district regards electrical disasters as the most likely and dangerous type of disaster and will conduct special inspections on electrical facilities at 84 public use facilities and 8 community center buildings. Gangnam-gu is the first local government to carry out a full inspection specifically targeting electrical disaster prevention, separate from regular on-site inspections.

In particular, this on-site inspection involves safety management professionals from the district office and external specialized agencies skilled in detailed inspections, establishing a robust safety management system. The inspection team will meticulously check electrical equipment and outlets, including power distribution facilities and distribution panels at the district office, cultural centers, lifelong learning centers, and daycare centers, thoroughly identifying fire and electric shock hazards.

Special focus will be placed on small-scale facilities without appointed electrical safety managers (facilities with power capacity under 75 kW), such as daycare centers. On-site education on electrical equipment safety management and electrical disaster prevention will also be provided. Minor issues found during inspections will be corrected immediately, with supplementary measures planned within one month. In October this year, electrical disaster prevention education will be conducted for facility managers and staff.

District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong stated, “We will do our best to ensure that all residents can use public facilities with peace of mind through proactive safety management measures,” adding, “We will continue to build a sustainable safety management system to strengthen disaster prevention capabilities.”
