Sinkholes and Road Subsidence Occur Repeatedly in Downtown Areas Like Gangnam and Jongno on Weekends (Comprehensive)

No Casualties or Accidents Reported
Authorities Investigating Cause

On the afternoon of the 31st, sinkholes and subsidence occurred one after another on roads in downtown Seoul, causing traffic to be controlled.

According to the police and fire authorities, around 4 p.m. that day, a sinkhole measuring 40 cm wide, 40 cm long, and 1.5 m deep was discovered in the third lane of a one-way, three-lane road heading from Jongno 5-ga Station to Jongno 3-ga Station on Subway Line 1 in Jongno-gu.


No traffic accidents or casualties occurred. The police are currently controlling the third lane where the sinkhole appeared.


Around noon that day, subsidence occurred in the third lane of a one-way, three-lane road heading from Eonju Station on Subway Line 9 to Hakdong Station on Line 7 in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu.


As a result, traffic was partially controlled but was lifted by 6:10 p.m. after reinforcement work was completed, and no accidents due to the road subsidence occurred.


The Northern Seoul Road Office and the Eastern Seoul Road Office are respectively investigating the causes of the sinkhole in Jongno-gu and the road subsidence in Gangnam-gu.


On the 29th, a sinkhole measuring 6 m wide, 4 m long, and 2.5 m deep occurred on Seongsan-ro in Yeonhui-dong, Seodaemun-gu, causing a Tivoli passenger car driving by to fall in, resulting in two people, including the driver, sustaining serious injuries.


The next day, road subsidence was detected about 30 meters away from the accident site.
