On the 29th, JTBC's 'Case Chief' reported the story of Mr. A, a husband who lost his wife and mother of three children in a traffic accident on the Jungbu Expressway last July. According to Mr. A, at the time of the accident, his wife was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle driven by an acquaintance, along with their daughter. The vehicle they were in was moving slowly due to the aftermath of a collision that had occurred ahead, but a following vehicle crashed into their car. It was revealed that the driver of the offending vehicle was operating the cruise control function at the time and failed to properly observe the road ahead.

As a result of the accident, the victim vehicle’s rear seat interior was severely crushed, leaving only about 8 cm of space. The victim was holding her youngest daughter, who was also in the car, while her body was crushed. It is reported that after paramedics rescued the daughter, the victim closed her eyes.

At the time, Mr. A went to the hospital after hearing the news that his wife had been in a traffic accident, but she was already deceased. The daughter suffered damage to her liver, pancreas, lungs, and other organs, and the acquaintance who was traveling with the children also sustained serious injuries.

Mr. A said, "It was 1 hour and 20 minutes after the accident that my wife was rescued. She was holding the baby (youngest daughter) until then," adding, "Later, when I asked my daughter, 'Did you talk to mom while you were with her?' she said mom was looking at her with her eyes slightly open." He continued, "According to the paramedics, she was alive until then, and when they took the child out first, the mother passed away."

While the husband was in shock over losing his wife, the perpetrator reportedly pleaded for leniency at the first trial held last week, claiming to have held a 천도재 (a Buddhist ritual for the deceased) for the deceased. Upon hearing this, Mr. A expressed anger, saying, "I don’t understand how the perpetrator, who doesn’t even know my wife’s personal information, claims to have held a 천도재." He added, "It seems like the 천도재 is just the perpetrator’s excuse and a plea for consideration," and said, "I saw the perpetrator in court, but he only nodded once. It was only in front of the judge that he started to say sorry."

Currently, the perpetrator’s side has deposited 50 million won as a settlement offer to Mr. A, but he refused to accept it. Mr. A said, "I am truly sorry that my children have to live their lives without their mother."

Meanwhile, the prosecution has demanded a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months for the perpetrator on charges of violating the Special Act on the Treatment of Traffic Accidents (causing death). The sentencing trial is scheduled for September 5.
