Outstanding Naming Skills Shown in Department Titles Like ‘Kkaekkeutan Mapogwa’ and ‘Saemapodamdang-gwan’ and Street Names Like ‘Hongdae Red Road’ and ‘Hapjeong-dong Sky Road’ Draw Attention
Park Gang-su, the mayor of Mapo District, is a passionate local politician.
He visits sites and residents throughout the day, with over 20 scheduled appointments daily. Even the heatwave cannot stop Mayor Park from making his rounds.
Starting as a small business owner, he transformed into a community activist, journalist, and politician, dedicating passion to every endeavor and achieving a rare level of success.
Moreover, Mayor Park possesses exceptional talents, including publishing poetry collections as a poet.
He has also drawn attention for his unique ability in ‘naming’ departments within the district office and streets in the community.
First, as the construction of the incinerator in Sangam-dong, the district’s biggest issue, arose, Mayor Park showed his passion for sanitation by splitting the former Sanitation Administration Division into two separate departments: the ‘Clean Mapo Division’ and the ‘Resource Circulation Division.’
Sanitation is a crucial area in urban administration, but because it is also the district’s biggest issue, he personally named the existing sanitation tasks to be handled by the ‘Clean Mapo Division,’ while recycling and incinerator-related matters were assigned to the ‘Resource Circulation Division.’
While most autonomous districts in Seoul operate a single sanitation administration division, Mapo District demonstrates agility by running two sanitation-related departments.
Additionally, the Planning Officer’s title was renamed to ‘New Mapo Officer,’ allowing Mayor Park to directly oversee key pledges. Department names such as Family Happiness Support Division, Employment Cooperation Division, Senior Companion Division, Health Companion Division, Pedestrian Administration Division, Water Management Division, and Road Improvement Division also stand out.
These department names were personally created (named) by Mayor Park to make them easily understandable for residents, making them even more remarkable.
Other autonomous districts tend to use conventional or Sino-Korean-based department names like Senior Welfare Division, Flood Control Division, or Road Division, making Mapo’s approach a fresh attempt.
Alongside this, Mayor Park personally named major achievements since his inauguration, such as ‘Hongdae Red Road,’ ‘Filial Piety Table,’ ‘Hapjeong-dong Sky Path,’ ‘Yeonnam-dong Kkirikkiri-gil,’ and Sangam-dong’s ‘Poet’s Street,’ which have greatly contributed to revitalizing local commercial areas.
A senior official of Mapo District said, “Park Gang-su, the mayor of Mapo District, has exceptional passion for his work and outstanding skills in naming departments and streets,” adding, “He always expresses gratitude for the hard work of the staff and has a warm heart.”
