"Earn an Extra 600,000 Won Monthly"…Why Office Workers Are Going Crazy Over This Side Job

Most Preferred Side Job Identified as 'Blog Management'

About 80% of office workers are either already engaged in side jobs or considering them, according to a survey. In particular, 'operating blogs, YouTube channels, etc.'?which can be done alongside their main job without much burden?was identified as the most popular side job.


The job application app 'Byeolguk Market' announced on the 29th that it conducted an income-related survey targeting 1,327 workers. As a result, 60.3% of respondents answered that there was 'no change.' The percentage of those who said their income 'increased' was 19.2%, while 20.5% said it 'decreased.'

The most common reason for income decrease was reduced working hours (39.3%). This was followed by a decrease in various allowances such as overtime and night shift pay (18.3%), and salary cuts (16.5%).


When asked whether they thought their household finances had worsened compared to last year, 81.5% of respondents answered 'yes.' The biggest reason for feeling worse was 'price inflation (79.0%).' This was followed by income decrease (8.9%), interest rate hikes (6.6%), increased debt (4.2%), and increased expenses (1.3%).


Because of this, the majority of workers were already engaged in or looking for side jobs. Among respondents, 82.1% said they are 'currently doing or considering side jobs in addition to their main job.' Only 17.9% said they had no intention of doing side jobs.


The main reason for taking on side jobs was 'difficulty living on salary alone,' accounting for 55.1%. This was followed by saving a lump sum (19.1%), repaying debt (10.7%), utilizing free time (6.7%), and preparing for retirement (5.1%).


The most preferred types of side jobs among workers were ▲operating SNS such as blogs and YouTube (20.2%) ▲event and staff work (17.4%) ▲restaurant serving and kitchen assistance (11.2%) ▲parcel delivery (9.0%) ▲logistics center work (8.4%), in that order.


As for the desired forms of side jobs, ▲operating SNS such as blogs and YouTube (15.9%) ranked first. This was followed by ▲office assistance (10.4%) ▲store management and sales, parcel delivery (each 9.7%) ▲restaurant serving and kitchen assistance (9.3%) ▲cafe and barista work (9.0%), etc.


The average monthly income from side jobs was 623,000 KRW. However, a gender gap was observed, with men earning 712,000 KRW on average, 178,000 KRW more than women, who earned 534,000 KRW.
