Local Government Officials Illegally Access Personal Information While Working
Prosecutors: "For Profit... Malicious Content Subject to Private Sanctions"
A YouTuber known as 'Jeontu Tokki,' who unlawfully disclosed the identities of perpetrators involved in a sexual assault case that occurred 20 years ago in Miryang, Gyeongnam, has been brought to trial along with his wife, who conspired in the crime.
The Changwon District Prosecutors' Office Criminal Division 1 announced on the 30th that they have arrested and indicted A, a YouTuber in his 30s, and his wife B, a public official in her 30s, on charges including violations of the Personal Information Protection Act and the Information and Communications Network Act.
A is accused of unlawfully disclosing the identities of the perpetrators of the Miryang sexual assault case on his YouTube channel 'Jeontu Tokki' from June this year until last month, using information secretly obtained from his wife. He is also charged with threatening and coercing some victims by demanding apology videos, threatening to disclose the personal information of the victims' families if they did not comply.
B is accused of illegally accessing the personal information, including resident registration numbers and addresses, of dozens of individuals involved in the sexual assault case while working as a public official in a local government in Chungbuk during the same period, and providing this information to her husband A.
The prosecution stated, "Although the YouTuber's personal profit generation is the motive, we will strictly respond to the distribution of malicious content that infringes on the victims' right to be forgotten under the pretext of 'private sanctions,' causing suffering not only to the victims and their families but also to innocent citizens."
