The police have dismissed charges against a Hankyoreh reporter who was accused of defamation after reporting allegations that First Lady Kim Keon-hee was involved in the designation of the presidential residence.
On the 30th, the Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced that on the 20th, the case was concluded with no charges due to insufficient evidence.
Earlier, Hankyoreh reported an article titled "Kim Keon-hee: 'I like this place'... Deciding on the residence as if on a site visit?" on April 27, 2022. At that time, an unidentified person filed a complaint with the police, which was later confirmed to be from the People Power Party.
The Korea Journalists Association pointed out, "Filing a criminal complaint through an unidentified person who is not even a party involved in an issue that should be discussed in the public domain is an act aimed at suppressing the media's watchdog role over power and a cowardly act that infringes on the defendant's right to defense."
