Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences Signs Agreement with Gyeongsang National University Animal Medical Center in Radiological Medical Science

Development of New Cancer Treatment Method, Also Applied to Pet Care

Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences (Director: Lee Changhun) and Gyeongsang National University Animal Medical Center (Director: Hwang Taeseong) signed a mutual agreement on the 29th at the conference room on the 2nd floor of the institute's Welfare Center for joint research and technological cooperation in the field of radiological medical science.

Present at the signing ceremony were Lee Changhun, Director of the institute, Jeon Wan, Chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Choi Chulwon, Head of Department, Yoo Dosol, Head of Department, and Lee Manwoo, Head of the Medical Physics Research Team at the Research Center. From Gyeongsang National University Animal Medical Center, Hwang Taeseong, Director, Noh Yunho, Deputy Director, and Choi Eulsu, Head of Department, attended, with Heo Chan, Director of S Animal Cancer Center, also present.

Gyeongsang National University Animal Medical Center is the only veterinary teaching hospital in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions, providing specialized care for companion animals in brain and neurological diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, oncology, and emergency and critical care. As a leader in veterinary radiation oncology, it is successfully applying radiation therapy to companion animal cancer patients in collaboration with S Animal Cancer Center.

Through this agreement, the two institutions will cooperate in technology development and research collaboration in the field of radiological medical science, personnel exchange, and joint use of facilities and equipment. Considering the increasing demand for cancer treatment in companion animals, the institute and the animal medical center plan to develop and apply the latest treatment techniques that can be applied to various types of cancer in companion animals.

Through these efforts, they aim to open new treatment possibilities for companion animals suffering from intractable cancers and focus on developing new cancer therapies. In particular, the institute has recently developed its own FLASH radiation technology, which is actively being researched worldwide, and has confirmed its superior safety and efficacy compared to conventional radiation therapy.

FLASH radiation therapy is a treatment method that delivers a high dose of 10-40 Gy within 0.1 seconds, reducing side effects on normal tissues from radiation therapy and increasing patient convenience and therapeutic effectiveness.

The institute also reported that in preclinical animal experiments using a self-developed FLASH electron accelerator, mice treated with FLASH radiation showed less long-term pulmonary and cardiac tissue fibrosis compared to conventional irradiation methods.
