The 2nd AI Industry Policy Committee Meeting Held
The government has decided to establish ethical guidelines for artificial intelligence (AI) to be applied to electrical and electronic products. It will also prepare legal systems to promote the industrial use of AI.
On the 28th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the 'AI Industry Policy Committee' at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, attended by Minister Andeok Geun and 12 AI expert members, to discuss these measures.
At the committee meeting, the National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the AI standardization strategy roadmap. The institute decided to timely develop 17 international standards to lead the global market. It plans to proactively develop technical standards required in the global market, such as safety evaluation standards for AI generative models, AI lightweight modeling, and AI maturity models.
Along with this, it plans to rapidly disseminate seven unique standards, including the 'AI Ethics Guidelines for Electrical and Electronic Products' that domestic companies can utilize for their AI products and services. It also plans to establish 13 international standards, such as the 'AI Management System (ISO/IEC 42001)', as national standards for domestic companies to refer to. The institute will expand the operation of the Industrial AI Standardization Forum and establish a comprehensive standardization support center.
At the committee meeting, promoting the use of industrial data, supporting initial private investments, and spreading best practices through the designation of flagship projects were identified as key policy directions to focus on in the future. Since the speed of innovation using AI is crucial, it was emphasized that investment environments and systems for leading industrial AI must be promptly established.
The government explained that it is preparing the 'AI Industrial Utilization Promotion Act' after expert supplementation, and plans to reflect legal and institutional tasks discovered through private policy recommendations and strategies in six major sectors, and proceed with legislation through consultations with the National Assembly and others.
The government plans to announce AI utilization promotion strategies in the distribution and energy sectors in the second half of the year. It also intends to announce a separate nurturing strategy for system semiconductors, the core hardware of the AI era, as soon as possible.
Minister Andeok Geun said, "Designing systems that promote innovation through AI utilization and expanding data and power infrastructure, which have become more important in the AI era, are also important tasks," adding, "We will focus the nation's capabilities on industrial AI utilization centered on the soon-to-be-launched Presidential National AI Committee."
