Cellist Christine Jeonghyun Lee Appointed Lifetime Member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra

Cellist Christine Jeonghyun Lee has been appointed as a tenured member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, one of the five major orchestras in the United States, the performance planning company Stage One announced on the 28th.


Lee passed an audition in February last year and began performing as a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra starting from the Tanglewood Music Festival in August of the same year. After completing a one-year probationary period, she became a tenured member. She is the third Korean tenured member in the history of the Boston Symphony and the first cellist to achieve this. Additionally, she became the first female cellist member in the Boston Symphony.

Lee was also appointed as a professor at the Curtis Institute of Music located in Philadelphia, USA. To mark its 100th anniversary, the Curtis Institute appointed four new faculty members, including cellists Christine Jeonghyun Lee, Nicholas Canellakis, Yumi Kendall, and clarinetist YaoGuang Zhai.


Lee was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music at the youngest age of 10 in 2002 and graduated in 2013. She made her debut performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Christoph Eschenbach in 2005. In 2016, she won first place at the Plovdiv Competition, Vibo Competition, and Liszt-Garrison Competition, and second place at the Aima Hog Competition and Chile Luis Sigall Competition. She also placed in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2017 and won the Isang Yun International Competition in 2018.


She studied under Gary Hoffman through the resident artist program at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium and completed her master's degree at the Juilliard School as a full scholarship student. In 2022, she joined the Mona Quartet in Paris and is actively performing across Europe.
