Creating Composite Images Using Photos of Friends and Teachers
The police are investigating teenage youths who produced and distributed deepfake pornography.
A Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency official stated at a regular press briefing on the 26th that 10 teenage youths who produced and distributed deepfake pornography by the end of last month have been booked on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. All of them are confirmed to be over 14 years old and therefore not subject to juvenile offender status.
The police official said, "Deepfakes are being produced and spread not only targeting students but also teachers," adding, "It is very concerning as it is spreading mainly among teenagers who are familiar with IT devices." He continued, "We plan to conduct preventive education in cooperation with the city and education offices to inform students that such acts are serious crimes punishable by law, and that a criminal record can become a major obstacle in their future social life."
Recently, deepfake sexual crimes, which synthesize faces and nude photos of acquaintances or unidentified individuals on social networking services (SNS), have been spreading nationwide, resulting in a series of victim cases.
As controversy arose with lists of deepfake victims among middle and high school students and university students being posted, some middle and high school student councils have issued notices through their own accounts and school websites warning, "Deepfake composite photos are being circulated, so please be cautious."
