S-Plus Comtec, Flame Retardant Sheet to Delay Thermal Runaway

Recently, battery-related fires have been occurring one after another. There have been electric vehicle fires in the underground parking lot of an apartment complex in Cheongna, Incheon, an electric vehicle fire in a parking tower in Geumsan, Chungnam, a fire at a battery company located in Jeongok-ri, Hwaseong, and a fire at an electric vehicle battery research facility in Icheon. Interest in the risk of battery fires is growing not only in Korea but also overseas in countries such as the United States, China, and Portugal.

On the 26th, S-Plus Comtec announced that it has developed a 'Flame-retardant Sheet for Delaying Battery Thermal Runaway' to respond to electric vehicle battery fires and is steadily improving its performance.

The thermal runaway delay flame-retardant sheet has a thickness of approximately 3.3 mm (±0.3) and has been tested to maintain a temperature of about 250℃ on the back side for over 100 minutes under flames exceeding 1200℃.

The battery thermal runaway delay flame-retardant sheet can be used across all battery-related business fields, including between cells and cells, modules and modules of electric vehicle batteries, internal materials of battery packs, and ESS. It is expected to be an effective product for providing sufficient evacuation time and rapid fire suppression in the event of a battery fire. Besides batteries, when used as building interior materials, it is expected to play a role in protecting lives and property from fire.

S-Plus Comtec is dedicating research efforts to develop thinner and lighter products with the same performance through customized design and manufacturing methods tailored to customer companies.

A company representative explained, "Fear of electric vehicle fires is spreading nationwide," and added, "Electric vehicle fires are increasing at a rate of nearly double every year." He continued, "Although the occurrence rate is slightly lower than that of internal combustion engine vehicles, the scale of damage is more than three times greater," and added, "Electric vehicles are difficult to approach and extinguish during fires due to thermal runaway causing temperatures above 1000℃ and continuous explosions."
