Seoul Jung-gu Hosts 'Dried Seafood Beer Festival' at Jungbu and Sinjungbu Markets

A refreshing midsummer night festival to cool down the heat of the hot summer will be held at Jungbu and Sinjungbu Markets, the largest dried seafood wholesale markets in Korea.

Jung-gu, Seoul announced on the 26th that the "7th Jungbu and Sinjungbu Market Dried Seafood Beer Festival" will take place here from the 28th to the 30th. This festival is planned and participated in directly by the merchants.

The festival begins on the 28th with a pre-event, the "Beer and Anju Pop-up Booth." On the 28th and 29th, from 2 PM to 8 PM, various dried seafood anju sets can be purchased at discounted prices around Gates 1 and 5 of Jungbu and Sinjungbu Markets, with beer booths also operating to warm up the atmosphere ahead of the main event.

The highlight of the Dried Seafood Beer Festival is the main event held on the 30th from 6 PM to 9 PM. Starting with accordion performances, followed by folk songs, yodel songs, and trot, four diverse performances will continue, designed so that families, university students, office workers, merchants, and tourists can all enjoy.

At the "Geonmaek Zone," visitors can enjoy fresh dried seafood and cold beer at reasonable prices. Eco-friendly reusable beer cups are used, considering both practicality and the environment.

Opened in 1957, Jungbu and Sinjungbu Markets have 619 stores with 655 merchants engaged in their livelihoods. In the 1980s, the market flourished with the great success of gulbi (dried yellow corvina), and it remains bustling during holidays with visitors preparing ancestral rites. At dawn, a spectacular scene unfolds with large-scale auctions of dried seafood brought from provinces, and in 2014, it was selected as a Seoul Future Heritage site.

Bang Youngpil, chairman of the Jungbu and Sinjungbu Market Merchants Association, said, "We hope that the Geonmaek Festival will help Jungbu and Sinjungbu Markets become a beloved destination for younger generations and tourists."

Kim Gilsung, the district mayor, stated, "We invite you to visit the Dried Seafood Beer Festival, where dried seafood anju and cold beer come together, to soothe your tired body and mind from daily life and create unforgettable memories."
