Gyeonggi Province is investing 30 billion KRW to carry out a flood-prone wetland improvement project in the Geumeo-ri area of Pogok-eup, Yongin City.
The flood-prone wetland improvement project is implemented for flood control purposes such as embankment reinforcement and riverbed improvement in areas urgently needing flood damage prevention.
Geumeocheon Stream in Yongin City aims to create a natural-friendly river environment and a flood-safe river environment, considering water retention and flood control, in the flood-prone sections identified in the basic river plan established in February 2012.
Geumeocheon Stream is a region where the narrow river width raises concerns about damage to farmland and residences during floods. The improvement project focuses on widening the river width according to the planned flood discharge, applying ecological block revetments, concrete paving on the embankment crest, and constructing flood defense walls in sections lacking embankment freeboard.
Gyeonggi Province will install 2.86 km of embankments and 6 bridges along a 2.01 km section of Geumeocheon Stream. Completion is targeted for the second half of 2026.
Kang Seongseup, Director of the Construction Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will do our best to ensure smooth progress of the construction to protect residents' safety and prevent property damage from frequent flooding." He added, "This project will introduce the ‘Direct Confirmation System for Construction Equipment Lease Contracts’ between construction contractors and individual construction equipment operators to create a construction environment in Gyeonggi Province free from wage arrears."
