Impact of Poor Sales of Apple Vision Pro
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has decided to halt the development of its premium mixed reality (MR) headset.
According to foreign media on the 25th (local time), Meta instructed its employees last week to stop the development of the premium MR headset following a product review meeting.
Meta had been researching the development of a high-performance MR headset aimed at competing with the MR headset Apple released in February. The product was being developed with micro organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology used in the Apple Vision Pro, targeting a release in 2027. However, due to the poor sales of the Apple Vision Pro, Meta also decided to discontinue its MR headset development.
The Vision Pro reportedly sold only 100,000 units since its release in February. This figure is significantly below the expected sales of 300,000 to 400,000 units for this year.
Sales of Meta’s MR headset, Quest, have also been sluggish. The Reality Labs division, responsible for the development and marketing of the Quest line, has incurred losses totaling approximately $50 billion since the second half of 2020.
