Daejeon City and KAIST signed a business agreement on the 23rd for next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) mobility research to ensure the smooth implementation of the "2024 Core Technology Development Project for Software Computing Industry," which was selected through a Ministry of Science and ICT public contest.

This project aims to develop the nation's first AI-integrated traffic simulator and apply it to simulation and impact assessment related to Daejeon's trackless tram pilot project (2025) and the operation of Line 2 tram (2028).

To ensure smooth project execution, the city and KAIST agreed to jointly discuss problem definition and technology development directions from the initial research phase.

The consortium includes the lead institution KAIST, Korea Transport Institute, Korea University, Daejeon Transportation Corporation, and related companies, with Daejeon City supporting as the demonstration institution.

The project period is a total of 42 months until December 2027, with the entire project budget of 6.825 billion KRW funded by the national government.

Daejeon City expects this research to greatly assist in establishing optimal operation strategies for the trackless tram pilot project, Line 2 (tram), and surrounding road networks, and plans to actively support the demonstration project by providing Daejeon's transportation data.

KAIST Professor Yeo Hwasu said, "Through this research, we will secure world-class mobility simulation technology and commercialize it to solve future urban transportation problems."

Jang Hojong, Deputy Mayor for Economic and Science Affairs of Daejeon City, stated, "Strengthening the cooperation system between the two institutions through the operation of the Daejeon-KAIST Strategic Project Research Center has recently led to remarkable achievements," and added, "We hope this project will not only succeed in technology development but also become a successful model for joint research between the city and the research complex."
