"I am a classmate of the president and prosecutor"…60s sentenced to prison for defrauding tens of millions with lies

On the 24th, Choi Hyung-jun, a judge of the Criminal Division 8 at the Seoul Northern District Court, announced that he sentenced Mr. A (61), who was indicted on charges of fraud and attempted fraud, to 1 year and 6 months in prison. Mr. A was charged with causing about 25 million won in damages to seven victims through methods such as lying and dine-and-dash.

It was confirmed that he told a victim, "I am a classmate of the president and a prosecutor, so if I talk to Seoul City, I can get approval immediately," and "I will let you move and operate a lottery ticket booth, so give me the key money." To another victim, he said, "The mayor of Seoul is my junior, so I secured the concession for a kiosk near the subway station," and "I need additional funds, and if you lend me money, I will give you the right to operate the kiosk."

In addition, Mr. A was found to have stolen from a victim who said, "The ring is big and keeps falling off," by saying, "I am a jeweler, so I will resize it," and also ordered alcohol and food at restaurants without paying.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The amount of damage caused by the crime is not small, and the defendant has not been forgiven by the victims," and "the defendant has a history of multiple punishments, including imprisonment, for similar crimes."
