Gunsan City to Provide Free Transportation for Middle School Students Starting September

Transportation Expense Support Up to 50,000 KRW per Month

Gunsan City in Jeonbuk announced on the 23rd that it will implement free transportation for middle school students starting next month, following the program for high school students.

According to the city, the free transportation project for middle and high school students is a pledge of the 8th local government administration. It was promoted based on suggestions from youth organizations and has been in effect for high school students since November last year.

The free transportation fee supports the use of city and village buses within the Gunsan area. Actual bus transportation costs are settled up to a maximum of 50,000 KRW per month and paid directly to the student's personal account.

The new eligible group includes middle school students registered as residents of Gunsan City, born between 2009 and 2011, and out-of-school youth can also apply. To apply for a transportation card, one must sign up on the Gunsan City free transportation website.

If membership was registered before the implementation of the second phase of the project, transportation cards will be distributed promptly through cooperation with middle schools, directly delivering the cards to applicants by school, as was done during the high school implementation last year.

Important notes: after receiving the card, it must be registered on the free transportation website. When boarding and alighting the bus, the dedicated transportation card must be tagged to receive transportation fee support. Please check the enclosed instruction leaflet with the card, and for further details, it is recommended to contact the City Hall Transportation Administration Division.

With the expansion of free transportation to middle school students starting in September, Gunsan City expects several benefits, including ▲ reducing transportation cost burdens for socially and economically vulnerable middle and high school students to guarantee free mobility rights ▲ increasing public transportation usage to revitalize public transit and the local economy ▲ participating in overcoming the climate crisis.

A Gunsan City official stated, "The city plans to continuously develop the project through monitoring that collects opinions from the youth users and holding meetings with them," adding, "We plan to improve shortcomings by continuously reflecting feedback such as satisfaction surveys on the free transportation project."
