Descendants of Busan Independence Activists to Explore Historic Sites... First Expedition of the Busan Liberation Expedition Team

79th Anniversary of Liberation and Wish for Establishment of Busan Independence Movement Memorial Hall: Tour of Independence Movement Historic Sites in Shanghai, Hangzhou, China, from 24th to 27th

Mayor Park Hyungjun Says, "Hope for Great Interest in Creating the Busan Independence Movement Memorial Hall to Pass on the Value of Independence History to the Next Generation"

Busan City will operate the 'Busan Gwangbok Expedition Team,' a program for young descendants of independence activists from Busan, to visit historic sites of the independence movement abroad.

The 'Busan Gwangbok Expedition Team' is being launched for the first time this year to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day. The aim is to retrace the footsteps of patriotic ancestors who dedicated themselves to the independence movement in foreign lands and to reflect on the noble spirit of the independence movement. This year, the team will visit historic sites related to the independence movement in Shanghai and Hangzhou, China.

Based on recommendations from the Busan branch of the Liberation Association, 28 descendants of independence activists aged between 18 and 39 have been selected. From the 24th to the 27th, they will visit historic sites related to the independence movement in and around Shanghai and Hangzhou for four days and three nights.

This expedition will especially visit key locations such as the Huangpu Pier in Shanghai, a major site of activities by the 'Uiyeoldan,' an organization where prominent Busan independence activists Park Chajeong and Park Jaehyuk were active. The team will also visit the 'Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea' building and 'Hongkou Park,' where Yun Bonggil carried out his historic act.

Among the participants, Hwang Jinuk, a member of the expedition team, is the grandson of independence activist Hwang Youngsik, who served in the Korean Liberation Army. He is expected to vividly experience his grandfather's activities and passionate patriotism during the trip.

Independence activist Hwang Youngsik (1913.1. - 1969.7.) enlisted in the Korean Liberation Army in 1940, received military training at the Hanqingban of the Chinese Army Central Training Corps, and was assigned to the 2nd Detachment. In April 1944, he joined the Korean Independence Party, and in June of the same year, he was appointed as a member of the security unit of the Provisional Government's Ministry of Home Affairs. In June 1945, he was transferred to the General Headquarters of the Liberation Army, where he served as a quartermaster officer. At 3:30 PM on the 23rd, a departure ceremony for the 'Busan Gwangbok Expedition Team' will be held in the main conference room at City Hall. The event will proceed in the following order: screening of a themed video, encouraging remarks by Mayor Park Hyungjun, an oath by the expedition members, a congratulatory performance, a departure performance, and a commemorative photo session.

About 100 people, including expedition members, the head of the Busan branch of the Liberation Association, and families of independence activists, will attend, creating a meaningful occasion where the younger and older generations are united by the spirit of the independence movement.

Mayor Park Hyungjun stated, "As the 'Busan Gwangbok Expedition Team' launches for the first time this year, I hope that young people from Busan, who are also descendants of independence activists, will deeply engrain the patriotic spirit of our ancestors who devoted themselves to protecting our country in foreign lands, fostering pride and further promoting the culture of honoring our patriots among the younger generation. The 'Busan Independence Movement Memorial Hall,' which our city is newly establishing in Citizen's Park, is expected to play a key role in preserving the value of our independence history and passing it on to future generations. I ask for the continued interest and support of our citizens."
