Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will resume the operation of the pet dog care shelter during the Chuseok holiday period from September 16 to September 18.
The 'Nowon-gu Holiday Pet Dog Care Shelter,' which has been operated for seven years since Chuseok 2018, is a representative animal welfare service of the district started to reduce the burden on pet owners planning to return to their hometowns.
This Chuseok pet dog care shelter is being held following a satisfaction survey conducted among dog owners who used the facility during the last Lunar New Year holiday, where all users expressed their intention to reuse it. It will be set up in the same place as before, the large auditorium on the 2nd floor of the district office.
During the care period, the dogs rest comfortably in the ▲hotel room decorated with cozy bedding such as cushions and mats, and enjoy playtime with various exercise equipment and toys in the ▲playground, which is divided according to their size.
To ensure the safety of the dogs staying at the shelter, the district assigns pet sitters in teams of three in two shifts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and uses on-duty personnel at night to carefully monitor the dogs’ condition. In case of illness or injury, they are promptly connected to a local 24-hour animal hospital to prevent serious accidents.
Additionally, individual basic information about each dog, including the owner's requests, is distributed to the pet sitters in advance. The service also provides twice-daily photo updates of the dogs to their owners ▲after morning feeding and ▲before bedtime, strengthening customized care that considers the characteristics of each breed for smooth pet care.
Applications are accepted from 9 a.m. on August 26 to 6 p.m. on August 30 via the Nowon-gu Office website, and the care fee is 5,000 KRW. Vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone, disabled persons, and recipients of national basic livelihood security can also apply by phone.
The shelter is available for small dogs under 8 kg raised by district residents who meet the following criteria: ▲at least six months old ▲registered and vaccinated against rabies ▲socially well-adjusted. Dogs with contagious diseases, pregnant or in heat are not eligible. It is recommended to prepare the dog’s usual food, toys, and bedding to help them adapt well to the unfamiliar environment.
Meanwhile, the district has been conducting various projects for coexistence between people and animals since opening the Nowon Pet Culture Center ‘Daengdaeng House’ in October 2020. These include protection and management of abandoned and abused animals, adoption of abandoned dogs, pet culture education, as well as providing convenience facilities for pet families such as community spaces and self-dry rooms.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “We have prepared the pet dog care shelter every year to support a comfortable journey home for those who need protection for their pets during the holiday season,” and added, “We will continue to strive to create a pet-friendly city where people and animals coexist perfectly.”
