Safety Experience Education Conducted in 31 Areas Including Self-Defense Techniques, Earthquake Simulation, and Ship Escape, Leading to Excellent Evaluations

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) has been selected as an excellent institution for two consecutive years in the 2024 National Safety Education Status Inspection results (2023 performance) conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

The 'National Safety Education Status Inspection Evaluation' has been conducted annually since 2019 to evaluate the implementation status of safety education policies of institutions and to spread best practices, in accordance with the Basic Act on the Promotion of National Safety Education.

This year, the inspection covered 25 central government agencies and 243 local governments nationwide to check the progress of safety education policies.

Seongdong-gu was selected as an excellent institution by implementing safety education in a total of 31 fields including fire, water safety, bicycle safety, earthquakes, and suicide prevention. Last year, it was also selected as an excellent institution for its achievements in safety education in 28 fields.

Notably, as the COVID-19 crisis level was downgraded last year, the district newly established safety education for new types of crises such as daily self-defense techniques and greatly expanded experience-oriented safety education. Through this, the number of trainees increased by 38% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 50,237.

The district also operates a bicycle experience learning center (Salgoti-gil 69). Last year, about 3,000 people completed bicycle safety education conducted by professional instructors.

In addition, through residents' informatization education, cyber fraud and cyber/smartphone addiction prevention education was provided to about 1,100 residents, and a total of 48 sessions of online and offline suicide prevention education were conducted for 5,883 workers from related organizations such as the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service and residents, showing special efforts to respect mental health and life safety.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Being selected as an 'Excellent Institution for National Safety Education' consecutively is the result of everyone working together to improve residents' safety culture awareness," and added, "We plan to continue providing high-quality safety education to enhance residents' disaster response capabilities and create a safe smart safety city Seongdong 365 days a year."
