Actor Choi Min-sik drew attention by advocating for the need to lower movie ticket prices, and multiplex CGV will introduce 'half-price tickets' later this month.

CGV announced on the 22nd that from the 26th to the 29th, between 5 PM and 9 PM, general 2D movies can be watched at half the usual ticket price, 7,000 won, during the 'Culture Week' event.

This expands the 'Culture Day' event, which allows watching movies at half price on the evening of the last Wednesday of every month.

The Culture Week event applies only to general 2D movies, excluding some films and special theaters. Customers who have already booked tickets for movies during this period can cancel and rebook to receive the Culture Week price.

This is the first time a domestic multiplex has expanded the 'Culture Day' event. CGV explained that the Culture Week event was prepared through consultations with producers, distributors, and others to revitalize the stagnant film industry.

Jo Jin-ho, head of CGV's domestic business division, said, "We hope that through Culture Week, customers' interest in movies will increase and serve as an opportunity to revitalize the Korean film industry."

CGV's attempt appears to be in response to criticism over ticket price increases. The three multiplex chains raised ticket prices from 12,000 won to 15,000 won (weekend standard for general 2D movies) during the COVID-19 pandemic to recover severe losses.

Regarding this, Choi Min-sik appeared on MBC's 'Son Seok-hee's Questions' on the 17th and criticized, "Haven't movie theater prices gone up a lot now? They should come down a bit. If they suddenly raise prices so much when the tide is rising, even I wouldn't go. With streaming services, people watch many movies sitting at home; who would go to the theater after all that effort?"
