JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential candidate and senator, dismissed on the 21st (local time) the attacks by Tim Walz on Donald Trump's policies as baseless. This was an immediate response to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's criticism at the Democratic National Convention on the same day, calling the Republican agenda "strange," "wrong," and "dangerous." Regarding the criticism from the Democrats over his past 'cat lady' remarks, Vance expressed displeasure, saying it was "just satire from the past."
In an interview with CNN on the night of the third day of the Democratic National Convention, Vance said, "Tim Walz said Trump's policies don't resonate with middle-class Americans, but Trump was already president for four years," adding, "His agenda worked very well for middle-class Americans." He further challenged Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Governor Walz to present which policies under the Joe Biden administration they believe were effective for the middle class.
The interview took place after the third day of the Democratic National Convention schedule concluded. Vance claimed that when Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg publicly criticized his past 'cat lady' remarks at the convention, "Pete Buttigieg is trying to hide from people the fact that under his leadership, transportation costs, fuel prices, and grocery prices have risen, by using a satirical comment I made three years ago."
He continued, "These people (Democratic politicians and supporters) focus only on the satire I made while ignoring the fact that under Kamala Harris's leadership, Americans cannot even afford basic necessities in this country," counterattacking. At the Democratic National Convention that day, besides Secretary Buttigieg, Oprah Winfrey and others also publicly criticized Vance's past 'cat lady' remarks. Earlier, Vance had been embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that in an interview he disparaged childless cat ladies, saying they were making the country miserable.
On the same day, Vance also criticized the process by which the Democrats nominated Vice President Harris as their presidential candidate following President Joe Biden's withdrawal as "a little bizarre." He mentioned that the Democrats had argued until recently that Biden was fit for re-election, sarcastically calling it "a lie."
He added, "When Biden became a political liability with no vitality, they replaced him without a single Democratic primary vote," asserting, "This is not illegal, but certainly a little bizarre." He also said, "If I were a Biden supporter, I would be quite frustrated with how this unfolded."
Furthermore, Vance said he has "no hesitation" about becoming President Trump's vice president. This was in response to Representative Jamie Raskin's claim on the first day of the Democratic National Convention on the 19th, questioning why a running mate position suddenly opened up in the Republican Party and alleging, "They tried to kill your predecessor." Vance dismissed this, saying, "I can't help but laugh at Jamie Raskin's words." He expressed, "There is no hesitation for this position because if we make Trump the president of the United States, he will raise wages, lower prices, and keep the borders secure."
