Elementary School 5th Graders Participate in School Garden Crop Planting Experience
Reevaluating Next-Generation Agriculture Through AI-Applied Farming Methods

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it is conducting the ‘Our School Garden Cultivation’ education program for 5th-grade elementary school students in the area.

The ‘Our School Garden Cultivation’ education program was designed to help students understand the importance of life and biodiversity by directly planting and growing crops in the school garden.

Students from 52 classes of 5th graders in 16 elementary schools plant and cultivate seasonal crops in the school garden while learning about the growth process. They also observe insects that appear during the crop growth and learn how to make natural fertilizer using microorganisms.

Students record the growth process of the crops in a garden diary, harvest the crops they have grown themselves, and share them, experiencing the joy and fulfillment of gardening.

The district started this project as the ‘Elementary School Ecological Garden’ and has been promoting the ‘Our School Garden Cultivation’ project for over 10 years, continuously improving the educational content to ensure high satisfaction among schools and students.

Especially from this year, the program teaches the importance of agriculture in protecting food security and food sovereignty amid increasingly severe climate change. The curriculum is also designed to help students rediscover agriculture as a promising industry through the latest farming methods applying artificial intelligence technology.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “The ‘Our School Garden Cultivation’ project is part of the environmental school program among the four major experiential schools, planned to reexamine ecological and environmental education and agriculture as a future promising industry,” adding, “We will continue to support students to engage in various extracurricular activities.”
