The Taste of Early Summer's Red Berries... Hungarian Wine 'Pannonhalma' with a Thousand-Year History

[2024 Global Wine and Food Trip]
YourWines, Hungary's 'Pannonhalma Monastery'
Introducing Wines from Pannonhalma and Tosone

Asia Economy will hold the '2024 Global Wine & Food Trip' for two days starting from the 23rd at the Floating Island on Sebitseom in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Marking its third year, the Global Wine & Food Trip will feature major domestic wine importers and food companies, providing an opportunity to taste various regional wines and enjoy food pairings.

YourWines will showcase a variety of wines from Hungary's 'Pannonhalmi Apatsagi' monastery, ranging from Pinot Noir to Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc at this event. The Pannonhalmi Monastery, designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in Hungary, began grape cultivation and winemaking by monks in 996 when the monastery was established.

The terroir of Pannonhalma is similar to the upper Loire Valley, Alsace, and Burgundy in France, depending on the plot, and produces high-quality Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, which are representative varieties of those regions, adapted to the microclimate and terrain. The 'Pannonhalmi Apatsag, Pinot Noir' is cultivated from four Burgundy clones across three vineyards. The hand-selected grapes undergo cold maceration in refrigerated tanks for six days, followed by fermentation at 25?26°C. Half of the wine is aged for 10 months in new Hungarian barriques, and the other half in once-used Hungarian barriques to complete the wine. The wine predominantly features nuances of red summer berries, from ripe raspberries to black cherries.

In addition to Hungarian wines, the event will also introduce 'Tosone Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC, Invecchiato in Barrique 2021' from the Bataillard AG group in Sicily, Italy. Tosone Nero d'Avola is made by selectively harvesting only high-quality grapes each year from numerous Nero d'Avola vineyards located between Marsala and Salemi in the northwest of Sicily. Nero d'Avola is the most widely produced red grape variety on Sicily Island, known for its deep color, smooth yet robust fruit aroma, and excellent aging potential.

Tosone Nero d'Avola is a full-bodied wine with soft tannins, balanced sweetness and acidity, and an overall harmony without leaning too much to any side. It is characterized by a rich bouquet of wild berries, dried plums, licorice, cocoa, and vanilla, layered with intense spiciness. It is enjoyable immediately after opening, but after 30 minutes, it reveals a fuller bouquet, good balance, and a long finish.
