"Samsung Display, the leader in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) field, will lead the artificial intelligence (AI) era."

Lee Cheong, Vice President and Head of Samsung Display's Small and Medium Business Division, made this remark during his keynote speech titled "Continuous Innovation of Displays in the AI Era" at the opening ceremony of 'IMID 2024' held in Jeju on the 21st.

Vice President Lee predicted that in the AI era, communication through images or videos, which are more familiar and intuitive than text, will accelerate, and that display specifications and characteristics will play a very important role when consumers choose on-device AI.

In particular, Vice President Lee emphasized, "Low power consumption that does not require charging for at least a day, vivid image quality indistinguishable from reality, and a large screen with high portability are essential conditions for displays in the AI era," adding, "The perfect display that meets these conditions is 'OLED'."

He explained, "Samsung Display is developing (OLED) technology by eliminating or replacing all factors that affect panel power consumption," and added, "We have developed the world’s first panel technology that delivers the same performance without using the polarizing film, which is commonly used in all displays, improving power consumption by more than 30%."

He also mentioned Samsung Display’s representative low-power OLED technologies, such as MFD (Multi Frequency Driving) technology, which selectively applies multiple frequencies on a single screen to reduce power consumption, and a tandem structure technology that improves luminous efficiency by about twice. Vice President Lee said, "In the near future, we will be able to reduce panel power consumption to less than half of the current level and secure extra power for AI."

Regarding high image quality, he stated, "Samsung OLED is more than 20% clearer than conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and shows faster response times than LCDs even at the same driving frequency," adding, "Especially for game content where victory or defeat depends on a response time of 0.01 seconds, OLED is essential."

He also introduced development efforts to provide displays that are large in size yet portable. Vice President Lee said, "In the 4G era, most smartphones were 6 inches, but with the advent of the 5G era, foldable displays have become mainstream, leading to the emergence of foldable smartphones. In the upcoming 6G era, demand for much larger displays will increase," and added, "We are developing various form factor products such as multi-foldables that fold twice and rollables."

He predicted that demand for microdisplays for extended reality (XR) devices will also increase significantly in the future. He said, "Although there are still barriers such as price and weight, if displays that improve these aspects are introduced, the XR device market will show tremendous growth," emphasizing, "Samsung Display acquired Imagine and is focusing on research and development to meet the demand for high-performance XR devices in the virtual reality and augmented reality era."

Additionally, Vice President Lee stated that as the use of electronic devices increases in the AI era, display technology that protects users’ eye health and ensures security is necessary. He said, "Samsung OLED, which reduces harmful blue light while accurately expressing colors, is essential for consumers who use display devices for long periods," and added, "Technology that reduces viewing angles with a special pixel structure to protect personal information in public places is also one of the very useful technologies in the AI era."
