The film 'John of Interest' surpassed 200,000 viewers, achieving the highest box office for a foreign independent film released this year.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 21st, 'John of Interest' (directed by Jonathan Glazer), which was released on June 5, recorded a cumulative audience of 200,342 as of the 20th.
The film attracted attention with a 50.7% reservation rate on its opening day and gathered 70,000 viewers within the first week. In its fourth week, it surpassed 'Poor Things' to secure the top spot among foreign independent art films released this year. On the 19th, its 11th week, it exceeded 200,000 cumulative viewers. Considering that 100,000 viewers for an art film is as valuable as 10 million viewers for a mainstream film, this is a remarkable achievement.
'John of Interest' tells the story of Auschwitz concentration camp, known as a site of the Jewish genocide during World War II, and the family involved. Through the picturesque daily life of Officer Rudolf H?ss and his wife, surrounded by blooming flowers outside the camp fence, it presents another perspective on the Holocaust. The Holocaust refers to the genocide of Jews perpetrated by Nazi Germany.
The film is a new release from Hollywood production company A24, and actor So Ji-sub was involved in its distribution. So Ji-sub and his agency 51k are credited as co-providers of this film.
