Security Certification for JK72, the Chip OS by Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation... "Possible Domestic Replacement"

Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation announced on the 21st that its self-developed Chip Operation System (COS) ‘JK72’ has received the highest level of security certification, ‘CC (Common Criteria) EAL5+’.

Through this, the corporation expects to fully replace the national ID cards, which have been operated using a mix of foreign-made chips, with domestically produced chips and operating systems in the future.

COS is a program that functions as a core system like Windows for computers, managing IC chips embedded in smart cards such as ID cards, financial cards, transportation cards, and communication cards.

CC certification is an international security standard that guarantees the security of IT security products, and IC chips and COS supplied for national ID cards must obtain CC certification.

JK72, which acquired CC certification, was developed by the corporation with the aim of fundamentally preventing forgery and tampering of national ID card data.

Sung Chang-hoon, president of Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation, said, “It is meaningful to localize security chips for national ID cards to prevent foreign currency outflow and to operate the national ID card project stably and independently. The corporation will strive to provide security services that citizens can use safely and conveniently.”

Meanwhile, the corporation is currently providing services that allow mobile ID cards for government employee IDs (2021), driver’s licenses (2022), and national veterans registration cards (2023). Next year, it plans to expand the scope to resident registration cards and foreigner registration cards.
