No Income Limit, Bus Fare for October-November Refunded in December
Applications Open from Next Month 2nd for Children 80,000 KRW and Youth 160,000 KRW, etc.
Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) announced on the 21st that starting this October, it will provide transportation fare support for city and village buses to seniors aged 65 and over, as well as children and adolescents aged 6 to 18, with applications accepted from the 2nd of next month.
The quarterly payment limits are 60,000 KRW for seniors, 40,000 KRW for adolescents (ages 13-18), and 20,000 KRW for children (ages 6-12), with seniors receiving up to 240,000 KRW annually. There is no income criterion, and the beneficiaries amount to about 160,000 people, representing 29% of all Gangnam-gu residents.
Mayor Jo Seong-myeong explained, “The transportation fare support was established to reduce the transportation cost burden on vulnerable groups, promote the use of public transportation, and alleviate traffic congestion.”
Transportation fare reimbursements will be made quarterly. If you apply for reimbursement at the beginning of March, June, September, or December, the reimbursed amount will be deposited into an account under the applicant’s name. If you complete membership registration in September, the bus fares used in October and November will be paid in December, and the amounts used from December through February of the following year can be reimbursed by applying in early March.
Applicants must register as members on the dedicated website. During membership registration, they must register an account under their own name and a preferential transportation card (for seniors) or a prepaid transportation card (for children and adolescents).
For seniors who are not familiar with online applications, in-person registration is also available at the local community service centers. Applicants must bring their ID, transportation card, and a bankbook under their own name to the community center of their residential district. Proxy applications are also allowed. Considering the expected high number of visitors during the initial implementation, a five-day rotation system based on the last digit of the birth year will be operated throughout September. Mondays are for birth years ending in 1 and 6, Tuesdays for 2 and 7, Wednesdays for 3 and 8, and so on.
However, cards that already receive transportation fare support from central government or Seoul city programs, such as the K-Pass, Climate Companion Card, and Seoul City Disabled Bus Fare Support Program, cannot be registered.
Mayor Jo stated, “Along with this support program, we will also promote an independent project that provides 200,000 KRW in transportation fare support when drivers aged 70 and over voluntarily surrender their licenses, continuously enhancing convenience for public transportation users.”
