5475 Registrations and Applications from 2018 to 2022
About 40% of All Companies in Korea, China, and Japan
LG Energy Solution has been found to hold the largest number of patents related to Battery Management Systems (BMS) among the three major domestic battery companies.
On the 20th, LG Energy Solution announced that according to a comprehensive survey conducted by the patent information research firm WIPS on BMS-related patents from 2018 to 2022 among the top 10 battery companies in Korea, China, and Japan, it ranked first with 5,475 patents. This accounts for about 40% of the total patents (approximately 13,500) held by the surveyed companies and about 73% of the patents (around 7,400) held by the three domestic battery companies.
In particular, the number of BMS-related patent applications has significantly increased since LG Energy Solution was spun off in 2020. From 2020 to 2022, LG Energy Solution filed around 800 new BMS-related patents annually, which represents about 87% of the total patents filed by Korean companies during the same period.
BMS is a system that monitors battery status and controls it to maintain and use the battery under optimal conditions. By utilizing various data such as current, voltage, and temperature, it plays a role in detecting and addressing potential issues in advance, such as ▲voltage drop during charging ▲abnormal degradation and discharge ▲capacity deviation of specific cells.
With recent consecutive fires raising concerns about electric vehicle safety, the importance of BMS technology for diagnosing battery status is emerging. The government is reportedly considering adding BMS to future electric vehicle safety standards.
