Busan Regional Headquarters of Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency Promotes Various Activities to Prevent Summer Suffocation Accidents

Summer (June-August) Intensive Campaign to Prevent Asphyxiation Accidents

The Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Director: Gong Heungdoo) has carried out various activities to prevent asphyxiation accidents in cooperation with local governments and related organizations, in line with the summer season when the risk of asphyxiation increases.

The main activities included: ① Raising awareness about asphyxiation accidents and promoting the Agency's equipment rental program for asphyxiation prevention by displaying banners at sewage treatment facilities and major industrial complexes in Busan, where the risk of such accidents is high; ② Conducting joint inspections and technical guidance for large-scale sewage treatment facilities with related organizations such as Busan City Hall and the Ministry of Environment; ③ Holding a relay campaign to encourage compliance with safety and health regulations for asphyxiation prevention; and ④ Broadcasting asphyxiation prevention information on the Busan Bus Information System (BIS).


Additionally, for those in high-risk workplaces such as sewage and wastewater treatment industries, as well as those responsible for waterproofing work where asphyxiation accidents have occurred this year, education was provided on: ① Essential safety rules for working in confined spaces, ② How to use equipment, and ③ Case studies of asphyxiation accidents.


Director Gong Heungdoo stated, "Asphyxiation accidents have a relatively high fatality rate, so it is important for workers to be aware of the risks associated with working in confined spaces. The Busan Regional Headquarters will also actively respond during the remaining summer season to prevent asphyxiation accidents and strive to create a safe working environment for confined space workers."
